Description

Program: The current Visitor in Lafayette will be demolished and a new one is to be built in the downtown area. This is a proposal for such a building.

Site: Located in Lafayette, Louisiana. This building is the first thing people see as they emerge from an underground transit tunnel. It is located along one of the main streets.

Construction: Built using steel frame construction, the two buildings are multi-skinned. The double facade consists of an outer skin of perforated metal. Behind it, is a double glazing system filled with argon gas and a Low-E coating.

Artist Statement: As society becomes more technological, fewer and fewer people rely on such traditional resources as a Visitor's Center. However, it is my belief that a Visitor Center is still necessary because actually being in an interior space where one can communicate with well informed persons and read brochures and such is a much more convenient and natural way of gathering information than sitting behind a computer.
These two methods of acquiring information, seemingly opposite, can be made to co-exist and rely upon one another. This concept was a determining factor in the design of the brother buildings. This is evidenced as the structures appear to fall away from one another, but there are tension rods acting as counter-supports. Also present in the interior, digital media is infused in the programming of the interior Visitor Center lobby. The interior was the main focus, as it is where visitors will primarily interact with the building.

*This is my final board printed at 4' X 4'. I plan to post some of the elements individually, but they still need some working so I won't put them on here yet.
